The First session that you have with your practitioner is an assessment that will last between 1 ½ and 2 hours. You will be asked about your current state of health and about any concerns you may have, whether they be physical, mental or emotional in origin. This first session follows the traditional diagnosis system used in ancient Chinese 5 Element medicine, and gives the practitioner an opportunity to get an insight into the way that you may be best treated by Plant spirit Medicine as well allowing time for a healing relationship to begin to develop between you. There will also be some basic physical examination, such as pulse taking, and checking the alignment of your spine. However there is no physical manipulation or treatment involved.
The treatment with the Plant Spirits begins on the second visit which is usually planned for a time within the next week, this session is shorter, usually between ¾ of an hour and 1 hour. During the treatment the practitioner will take your pulse frequently to assess how you respond to each part of the treatment. The treatment takes place on a couch, although unlike massage you do not need to remove any clothing for the treatment.
After a session it is usual to feel quite relaxed and it is best if you can organise yourself to have a quiet time for the rest of the day following the treatment. Your practitioner will always be available to talk to you and assess your pulses between sessions if it is necessary, they will advise you of the times when they are available.
The first session assessment lasts for 1½ - 2 hrs.
The second session is usually ¾ hr - 1 hr
The following treatments are usually timed weekly at first and then will become more spread out, depending on individual needs.
As Plant Spirit Medicine is a shared process of healing involving you, the Plants and your practitioner, it is something which needs to be honoured with the appropriate amount of time for changes to occur. It is always difficult to predict how long this may be, but it is important that you are prepared to make the necessary commitment to enable your own process of healing to occur. It is not a treatment which is given as a one-off session.
As the plants are being used on a spiritual level they are not given to you in a physical form to take internally.
PSM is concerned with restoring the body's harmony and balance, and does not use any medical or other intervention that is likely to cause side-effects or other physical problems. Sometimes in the process of returning to health certain ailments which have been suppressed in the past may work themselves out, this may cause some temporary aggravations in the form of old symptoms temporarily returning, however these will usually be shortlived. Your practitioner has been trained to ensure that you are given any support and assistance that you might need during any time that such problems might surface.
There is no reason why PSM shouldn’t be used during pregnancy, as it is always supporting our own journey towards balance and wholeness, and is not a threat to natural processes such as pregnancy. However if you have specific concerns you should speak to your practitioner.
Plant Spirit Medicine focuses on the underlying constitutional balance of each individual, if this balance improves the symptoms of specific conditions will also improve. The symptoms are actually the messengers of imbalances at deeper levels and merely treating the symptoms as is practised in conventional medicine will not resolve the underlying causes of sickness. Plant Spirit Medicine can help everyone whatever their situation in furthering them on their own journey of healing by bringing us closer to a state of balance and harmony.
Your practitioner will not tell you to discontinue any medication that you might be using that has been prescribed to you by your Doctor. However it is preferable if your practitioner is able to be sure that any changes which may be occuring in your condition are related to your treatment, so usually you will be asked not to use any other therapies concurrently with PSM especially those which may be acting on an energetic or spiritual level.
The 5 Element theory was developed by ancient Chinese healers who likened the body to a perfect state, with many officials who had specific roles and responsibilities concerned with keeping the whole state in perfect harmony. Each of the officials has a connection to specific body systems and organs, and by assessing the pulse connected to each official and organ the practitioner can assess the health and balance of the underlying constitution in the body. The internal balance is seen as related to the balance of the natural world around us, and each of the elements relates to the seasons and natural elements in the world, when these are in balance the world is in harmony, as the body will be also. By enabling the Body to move closer to a state of harmony and balance a better state of health in the body and mind will be achieved.
Shamanism is a vision of the world which accepts that all material things are dependent for their existence on an underlying spiritual reality. By engaging with this spiritual reality it is possible to effect in a positive way outcomes within the material world. Shamanism uses benign healing energy such as that contained in the spirits of the plants to bring about a healing on the level of spirit, which will then surface as healing in the material world itself.
